Project Work
Speak Out regularly delivers projects. Some of these are delivered in partnership with other organisations.
All of our projects embrace the knowledge of people with lived experience.
Some of our current and past projects are included below.
Respect (Our) Ability
What is Respect (Our) Ability?
Respect (our) Ability is a project to help people with intellectual disability become leaders.
It is run by Speak Out Tasmania and the South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability (SACID).
It helps people in Tasmania and South Australia.
What does the project do?
It helps people with intellectual disability:
-
Be part of boards, meetings, and groups.
-
Make their own decisions.
-
Learn about their rights; and
-
Be leaders in their community.
How Does it Work?
People with intellectual disability help design the project.
They work with boards and other organisations to make them more inclusive.
The project uses co-design and action learning strategies.

Speaking Up in the Bush
This project is about delivering self-advocacy activities on the West Coast of Tasmania.
What is the Goal?
-
To find and develop ways to support self‑advocacy that can last over time in different places.
-
We know that what works might differ from place to place.
How will the project work?
-
The project includes a mix of online delivery, in‑person activities, and local partnerships.
-
The aim is to fill gaps in self‑advocacy support for people with intellectual disability in regional and rural areas.
What will the project support?
1. Skill building
-
Workshops and training sessions to help people learn about their rights, how to advocate for themselves, and make their own decisions.
2. Connection
-
Opportunities to meet and learn from other people, such as through peer support and self‑advocacy groups.
3. Leadership
-
Opportunities to lead peer groups and self‑advocacy networks.
-
People can mentor others with intellectual disability.
Why is the project important?
-
Speak Out runs monthly Self Advocacy Groups across Tasmania—including Burnie, Hobart, and Launceston—and this project extends that support to the West Coast.
This project is about making self‑advocacy real and lasting in communities on Tasmania’s West Coast—helping people with intellectual disability to learn, connect, and lead.
