Our Story
Speak Out is the oldest advocacy organisation in Tasmania for people with intellectual disability.
Speak Out provides individual advocacy to people with different types of disability, not just intellectual disability.
Speak Out started in 1982 with a big conference to help people speak up for themselves.
In 1989, Speak Out began giving advocacy services to members.
Speak Out is a membership organisation for people with intellectual disability.
Self-Advocacy groups meet every month in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.
Speak Out is a Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO). This means it is run by people with disability, for people with disability.

Speak Out is respected across Australia and the world for promoting human rights. We are often asked to give advice and share our knowledge.

Governance
Speak Out Advocacy operates under a dual governance model Members Executive (ME) and the Board of Directors.
The ME and the Members President is voted in by our members at our Annual Conference.
An independent skills-based Board of Directors are interviewed and approved by the ME and endorsed by members at our annual AGM.
The Members President is also a Director of the Board.

Speak Out Advocacy is a founding member of Inclusion Australia (NCID).
A member organisation of the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia (DANA); and
A member of Inclusion International.
