Empowering Self-Advocates
Our Story
The Speak Out Association of Tasmania Inc (Speak Out) is the longest serving advocacy organisation in Tasmania for people with intellectual disability.
Speak Out was initially established in 1982 to promote self-advocacy through the annual conference, Speak Out commenced delivery of advocacy services in 1989.
Speak Out is a membership organisation for people with intellectual disability.
Self-Advocacy groups meet each month in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.
Speak Out is a Disabled Persons Organisation (Run by and for people with disabilities), the Tasmanian member of Inclusion Australia and a member of the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia (DANA).
We are recognised nationally and internationally for promoting human rights for people with intellectual disabilities and are regularly asked to provide counsel and consultations.

Speak Out - The Line in the Sand
Governance
Speak Out Advocacy operates under a dual governance model Members Executive (ME) and the Board of Directors. The ME and the Members President are voted in by our members at our Annual Conference.
An independent skills-based Board of Directors are interviewed and approved by the ME and endorsed by members at our annual AGM, the Members President is also a member of the Board of Directors.

Defending Human Rights
Speak Out passionately defends the human rights of people with disability and was recognised by winning a Human Rights Award in December 2017.

Partnerships
Speak Out Advocacy is a founding member of Inclusion Australia (NCID), a member organisation of the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia (DANA), and Inclusion International.
